OUR HISTORY

The 112,000-square-foot building at 180 Colonel Bell Drive is a virtual twin to the Mary E. Baker School on Quincy Street. Designed by HMFH Architects and built by Agostini Construction, each school houses approximately 750 students. The two schools cost a total of $67 million, with 90 percent reimbursement from the Massachusetts School Building Assistance Bureau.

One of the city's newest schools is named for former Brockton Public Schools Superintendent Manthala George, Jr., a dynamic educational leader who headed the city's school department from 1984-1994, a decade of progress in spite of dire financial constraints. The son of Lebanese immigrants, George grew up in Brockton, was educated in city schools and has spent his life giving his time and efforts to bettering the community.

When it opened, the school welcomed 100 students in grades 3-6 from the Whitman School and 200 students in kindergarten through sixth grade from the Arnone School Spanish Two-Way Language Instruction and Spanish SEI programs. We have since added two new dual language programs to help students acquire valuable language skills in French and Portuguese. Our programs are known as Juntos, teaching Spanish and English, Unidos, teaching Portuguese and English, and Amitié, teaching French and English.

The school is brightly lit and welcoming, instilling a sense of warmth and cheerfulness. Designed with the needs of 21st century students in mind, the building is handicapped-accessible and boasts a glistening gymnasium with seating for 500, a sunny cafetorium with a stage canopied by a Queen's arch, and an airy third floor library with built-in shelves, banks of computers, a reading room and meeting space.

The George School is surrounded by lawns fed by an underground irrigation system. The property has two brand-new playgrounds, soccer and playing fields and a community meeting room. The building has large, open Art and Music Rooms that have ample storage and room for a kiln for art classes and practice space for music. The Guidance Suite has private offices for meeting with students and parents, as well as a small conference room.
